First, there’s Christmas, always an exercise in excess, despite my husband and my vows to each other that we won’t go overboard.
Then comes my birthday in January, followed by my husband’s birthday in early February. By the time Valentine’s Day rolls around, neither one of us is feeling very creative when it comes to gifts.
This year, I’ve told my husband: Let’s sit this one out. But then I got to thinking about some gifts I would really enjoy, which wouldn’t cost a dime.
Here they are:
A day off from making dinner and cleaning the kitchen afterward. My hubby does his share of cooking, but cleanup always seems to fall to me. And let me tell you, when my husband cooks, cleanup is NOT pretty.
A TV-free day. Between my 12-year-old and my husband, it seems as if the TV is on 24/7. I have to order them to shut it off while we’re eating — though sometimes we do watch Wheel of Fortune. That’s educational … right?
A clothes-on-the-floor-free day. Yeah, hubby and son, I’m talking to BOTH of you.
A needy-animal-free day. (Hey, I’m sensing a trend here!) We have two dogs and a cat, and all three are the neediest creatures ever. The attention I give them — belly rubs, chin scratches, cuddles — is never enough. One dog actually uses his paw to guide my hand to his stomach if I take a break from the belly rubbing. The cat jumps on the bed and runs his snaggle-tooth against my head — yes, while I’m sleeping! — to announce his need for attention. And the other dog is firmly planted on my lap whenever possible. Thank God he, at least, is too little to jump on the bed.
OK, who am I kidding? If I got my wish on these presents for Valentine’s Day, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself!
So moms — and dads — what would YOU really like for Valentine’s Day?
